BBC iPlayer on Linux project Wiki
This is a project to bring the BBC iPlayer to the GNU/Linux and *BSD/Mac OSX Operating Systems.
The BBC has been heavily criticised for not providing iPlayer on Mac OSX or Linux.
This is something that the iPlayer on Linux project hopes to fix.
Although initially this project aims to put the iPlayer on Linux, porting (via wine) to BSD/Mac OSX is a very simple task.
Currently a copy of the BBC iPlayer library has been uploaded to rapidshare.
Current project roadmap:
1. Install iPlayer dependencies in wine.
- Internet Explorer 6 --- COMPLETED:
This is easily completed using the script at:
http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/page/Installation
Internet Explorer as installed by the above script is, however, installed on a separate registry to your regular wine set-up. If you have not installed any other applications on wine yet an easy work-around is to run the following command:
ln -s ~/.ies4linux/ie6/ ~/.wine
- Windows Media Player 10 --- COMPLETED
Instructions from winehq.org:
Install Windows Media Player 9
Use winecfg to set the Windows version to Windows XP
Be sure to run the installer from a console. When a winebg prompt (wine-dbg>) appears, type 'quit'.
This causes the installation to finish. This should install all the necessary DRM components for the iPlayer.
- Windows Installer 2.0
This is something wine does natively since the offical Microsoft version doesn't work.
2. Install the iPlayer application
This causes difficulties because the wine msi software claims IE6 is not installed.
NEW: This can now be worked using the Orca software mentioned at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827021.
See Progress page for more information.
3. Get wine to run KHost.exe and KService.exe - Kontiki
4. Get the video to play
